CUSTOM ROYAL
Fly By Night Members Since 2010
Custom Royal is a rock quartet consisting of members Dion Mariani (guitar), Mitchell MacKintosh (guitar), Cameron O’Loughlin (bass), Darcy Barnard (drums), and have been described as, “The punchy rock sound Perth is missing.”
With influences like Led Zeppelin, The Who and The Beatles shaping their Rock/Pop sound how could you go wrong?
The band has been playing a myriad of local shows supporting the likes of Datura, Kevin Borich and many others.
With new exciting songs continuing to pump out, more gigs and the possibility of an EP on the horizon the band is gaining momentum and spreading the word... Custom Royal!!!
Channelling summer with a partiality to the sunny West Coast, these four fellows could not be further from their moniker. With a knack for melody and sundrenched ditties reminiscent of The Beach Boys and Fleetwood Mac, Rainy Day Women make bright savvy music of the pop variety.
The outfit’s 2013 has kicked off in style, with spots on the bill at Southbound, Big Day Out and St Jerome’s Laneway festivals. Latest single and EP title track Friends is currently enjoying a good deal of love at radio, and mid-March will see the band tour in support of the new release, with dates in Perth, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.
Their forthcoming sophomore EP ‘Friends’ shows a more focussed Rainy Day Women. Whilst still possessing their trademark classic pop hooks and slacker indie vibe, the six-tracker is more honest and speaks with a more assertive, grown-up vibe than their debut. Recorded with producer Andy Lawson (Eskimo Joe, The Chemist) and mastered by Brian Lucey (The Black Keys, The Shins), ‘Friends’ is a step up and two jumps forward for these purveyors of indie pop.
The Date has been busy over their one-and-a-half year career having independently released both their first E.P. (MPD To Me), and their latest E.P. (Rob Bury), with the ’Rob Bury Launch held at the Fly By Night in Fremantle.
The Date combine groove-laden rock riffs with a catchy pop choruses and are an exciting an innovative band with a great live presence and show.
Blues-based rock has been a radio staple for years, and the band are self-confessed afficionados. However, their own take at the genre has evolved into something quite distinctive; it’s a rock sound with pop sensibilities, lyrically rich with a no-nonsense delivery.
The members, David Moran (bass and vocal), Rob Susanto (guitar) and Mark Thomas (drums) are no strangers to the live music and recording scene, having been in numerous original bands nationally & internationally, such as 'Skidaddle' (Perth), 'Express to Richmond' (Melbourne) and 'Luton Lads' (UK).
Whilst the songwriting is a joint collaboration between all three band members, David had been the song-writer and musical director for a range of other musical projects before pulling this band together, including local band 'Aleglass', a four-piece band that saw the release of multiple full-length albums. Rob and Mark collaborated on several of David’s earlier projects.
Today, they find themselves back together in a leaner, meaner version of their previous guises. The trio format reveals the raw groove and hard rock interior that forms their stop-you-on-your-way-to-the-bar sound. With a style rooted firmly between blues and hard rock, the Date is ready to take these timeless genres to the next level with their original sound and throw the gauntlet down into the current musical soundscape.
San Cisco are four friends who on the back of releasing two EPs (“Golden Revolver” and “Awkward”) have gone onto write and record their debut album, releasing it under their very own label, Island City Records. San Cisco’s self-titled debut poses a new sound for the Fremantle band, experimenting with synths, keys and guitar licks as well as a few things that they’ve turned upside and on their head in the recording studio under the guidance of Steven Schram.
You probably already know their summer anthem, ‘Awkward’, landing at #7 on triple j’s 2011 Hottest 100 poll. It was the introduction to Scarlett Stevens’ vocal, a quirky duet between lead singer Jordi Davieson and Scarlett. Since then, Scarlett has taken a larger role in singing and her vocals take a leading role in their debut recording.
Recorded in Melbourne’s Sing Sing Studios over the 2012 winter, the band walked four kilometres to and from the studio every day, taking the time to de-brief and add new elements to their songs. Although the cold weather and chilly winter mornings did little to affect San Cisco’s take on bright, indie-pop. The band took their time in the studio, playing around with their vintage instruments including a Roger’s Holiday Kit, Fender Rhodes and the Minimoog allowing them to experiment with new sounds.
Producer Steven Schram (Little Red, The Cat Empire & King Cannons) allowed the band to experiment with new layers and sounds challenging the four piece with his skills and quirky outlook. Texturing the album is Josh Biondillo’s collection of vintage synths, who explains that due to the age of the instruments he has amassed, they “needed to be auto-tuned a lot, as many of the synths couldn’t hold tune“ and the whole band chimes in that they were all “really old.”
The album is a collection of the band’s thoughts on life, growth, relationships and love all tied together with infectious drum beats, slashes of synth and bright catchy hooks. The eleven songs that make up San Cisco’s self titled debut captures their outlook on life from sunny Fremantle.
Dangerous and bizarre but most of all cool, Loose Lips represent everything that is truly reprehensible about rock’n’roll. Their songs are broken and twisted pop. The Loose Lips swagger with the festering sound of the underground.
More Dangerous than a cult leader with a vision, singer Louis Miles dominates the stage backed by his band - K.T Rumble (Abbe May), Anthony Chiovitti, Ben Mathews and Tony Pola (Beasts of Bourbon, Kim Salmon). Their signature sound - Miles' deep cannibalistic wailing, Rumble's mutant guitar thrashing and Tony Pola's primal rhythmic pounding. Live performances are nothing short of a total, no-holds-barred rock’n’roll assault.
The Loose Lips are the sound of the western world falling apart.
2012 may not have seen the end of the world, but it has seen the rise of the Loose Lips.
"A Justin Walshe Folk Machine live show sits somewhere between a campfire yarn, a sea shanty, bush poetry and a country rock hoedown. In a one hour set you might get an historical anecdote about convicts and shipwrecks, croony, delicate tales on love and whisky (in no particular order), and plenty of barnstorming folk rock to tie it all together. The band's second album ..Walking To China.., replicates the experience well, but heightens the natural drama of songs like Pockets Full of Gold with cinematic flourishes and sound effects." Emerging from arguably the world’s most isolated capital Perth Western Australia, Dom Mariani is a rock and roll stylist who’s career has been a resplendent one in the creative stakes – a songwriting road that has never wavered from excellence.
With a serious interest and love of underground 60’s garage rock, classic pop, power pop, soul and R&B, Dom would form one of Australia’s most loved and respected bands of the mid to late 80’s THE STEMS.
Hyte was first conceived when G Funk, Chasm Spasm and Sticca-licious fuked each others ear pussies. The giant ear-gasm was so profound and profuse that it took physical form and excreted cosmic goo all over them. Making them super powerful to this day forth!
Hyte are a rock trio from the outskirts of Fremantle; and have been jamming and juicing away since 2007, getting our groove on and developing our sound. As a trio we have played around Perth/Freo and WA since 2009. and we released our self-titled debut EP in 2012. Now we are about to release our 2nd recording; the 2 track single "Where are you taking me".
Irish born singer/songwriter Lynda Smyth has been performing in bands from the age of nineteen. It was in 2005, when Lynda returned to Ireland, that she began writing her own material. From the lounge-room of her uncle’s Dublin home, the birth of her song- writing career began.
After her return to Perth, Lynda began playing at local venues. With haunting vocals, lullaby melodies and honest lyrics she began to receive much praise and recognition. This led to the recording of her debut EP, “Too Long Spring” in 2006.
Australian musicians.
In 2008, Lynda began recording her first album, Just Pretend. The album consists of an eclectic mix of songs, with local artists lending their talents and bringing her work to life.
Following the success of the album, Lynda sought out like- minded musicians to help reproduce and recreate her songs. In 2011, Lynda finally found her band, ‘The Borrowed Few’. Local musicians, Tashana Tweddle, Dean Lucas and Peter Renzullo now lend their own talents and musical magic to the project. With the addition of double bass, violin, piano and mandolin, the songs have been given a new lease on life. With sweet captivating melodies and harmonious hooks, it is safe to say that this ‘borrowed few’ are here to stay!
The Cross Eyed Cats started out life in 2002. There was five of them. The departure of one member* to (inconsiderately) pursue work in Victoria meant the band had to quickly regroup as a quartet. Still, what band actually needs two guitarists?
Early live performances included residencies at the Davilak Hotel in Fremantle and Clancy's Fish Pub in Subiaco along with the occasional gig at the Fly By Night Club. Amongst other purveyors of fine blues music (and beer).
However, after a happy 18 months at the Davilak and 4 at Clancy's the band suffered an enforced layoff due to work commitments, illness and jetsetting. It's a hard life.
But they've got the band back together and will play for folks for a modest monetary return.
Bad things happen. That's why the Cross Eyed Cats play bloody good blues.
Applebite the Beggars on Acid initially started as a project by Welshman Justin Powell.
It was during the early 90’s and the Seattle Grunge scene was dominating the music charts. Justin was heavily inspired by this music movement including the likes of Soundgarden and Alice in Chains. This led to the origin of their name. “Applebite”, which originally comes from a Soundgarden song off the album “Down off the Upside”. Word is that late one evening Justin happened to be looking out the window and saw beggars out on the street tripping out; Applebite the Beggars on Acid.
In 1998 Justin relocated to Australia and settled in Denmark WA. It was here that he formed his first trio and in 2009 they released their debut album titled “The Corrupted Generation”. After some personnel changes Ryan “Dutchie” Holland, an Albany based multi-instrumentalist promptly settled in behind the drums. Rod rounded out the trio on bass and they subsequently relocated to the “big” city of Perth. The move enabled them to develop a larger fan base and play in a larger number of local venues.
This trio then recorded an EP “Down to the Core”. Justin’s playing and writing had matured tremendously and the 3 tracks showcased a West Australia Grunge that now had become identifiably theirs.
In 2011 Paul Jorgensen, a South African bassist joined the group and the trio started to explore darker themes and a much more prominent lower end. This new line-up started playing more shows in Perth, Denmark and Albany and audiences started paying closer attention to the music emanating from the stage.
In 2012 they were approached by an ECU student currently completing his Film studies. Terence Tang ended up directing the video for their new single “Fix Me” which has now just been officially released.
They are currently mixing new songs for release later in the year with plans to tour the East Coast of Australia in April of 2013. They are a great live act, always go off for the crowd......Three PUNKS on a mission...

Residing in Fremantle, WA, Red Engine Caves had been perfecting their live sound throughout 2012, before retreating to record songs for an upcoming EP. Just listen…
